 | | Fishing The location of Land's End Lodge on the northern point of Prince of Wales Island
allows easy access to some of southeast Alaska's finest salt water
fishing and fresh water fishing. Whether you're anxious to land a big
halibut, fight an acrobatic salmon, or tie on a fly or spinner and hit
the streams - Land's End Lodge offers the kind of angling excitement
that you've been dreaming about. Salt Water Fishing Sumner
Strait is known as one of southeast Alaska's most productive salt water
fishing areas. The strait sustains large populations of halibut, ling
cod, and rock fish of which the best known is red snapper. The strait
is also a major migration corridor for all five species of pacific
salmon. Phenomenal numbers of salmon move right past the lodge as they
prepare to spawn in the streams and rivers of southeast Alaska and
British Columbia. The lodge's proximity to Sumner Strait provides salt
water fishing that is almost at our doorstep. Guests seldom go more
than three miles from the lodge to troll and mooch for salmon. Halibut
fishing occurs in water depths of 80 to 160 feet and jigging during
slack tides using bait or lures and 12 to 16 ounce cannonball weights
is very effective. Smooth, protected water adds to the enjoyment of
fishing in our area. |
You'll
want to plan your trip according to the type of fish you are most
interested in catching. For example, the best time to fish for King
Salmon is from mid-may through June although you may still catch one or
two in early July. Silver Salmon can be caught anytime during the
season, but are most abundant from mid-July through September. Halibut
are available all season; the largest halibut can be caught in late
July through August. |
| | Fresh Water Fishing | Prince
of Wales Island is a fresh water fisherman's paradise. Our boats and
vehicles put you within easy reach of over twenty streams and rivers.
Excellent spin cast and fly fishing for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden
char is available all season. Fly fishing guests start coming up in
late July through mid-August to fish for a Pink and Chum Salmon which
are entering the streams to spawn. The most exciting time occurs in
late summer when tens of thousands of hard fighting Silver Salmon start
running in the fresh water tributaries of Prince of Wales Island
providing fly fishermen with an unforgettable angling experience. |
